St. Gregory’s Abbey

March 28, 2010

Today our church group went on a field trip to St. Gregory’s Abbey in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The The Benedictine Monks at the Abbey are Franciscan Monks, the oldest group in Oklahoma who established the first church and the very first university….yep….before OSU and OU. Brother Benet Exton gave us a tour of the Abbey. We also received a tour of the museum and the university. At 5:00 pm we returned to the Abbey for Vespers. All I can say is that hearing Vespers was my favorite part of the day. Don’t get me wrong, the university was great and I thought it would be a great place to teach (or go to school) but hearing the monks during the Vespers was so tranquil, calming, peaceful and you could feel the love in the Abbey. Afterwards the Abbot Lawrence came out and thanked us for coming and answered questions. What a great place to visit, what a great day…..I’ll be returning again to spend more time looking at the paintings, statues and historical items.
