Two Hot Pads

Yolanda, loves chili peppers and her kitchen is decorated with chili peppers so I made her these items to compliment her decor. The towels are made with cotton chili pepper fabric and homespun cotton woven fabric (always preshrink the homespun before working with it).
I also made her two potholders. Each potholder is made in this manner from the bottom up: one layer of decorative fabric, one layer of heavy-weight muslin, one layer of cotton batting, one layer of insul-brite, one layer of cotton batting, one layer of heavy-weight muslin, and a top layer of decorative fabric. I quilt the layers together and then use my roller cutter and ruler to trim to a nice shape and finally, finish with a cotton binding. They turned out nice and thick….good protection from the heat!
The tortiilla warmer in this large size was a special request. I’ve never seen one before but it was super easy to make. I used an oversized plate to cut out the circles. This was for the 10″ tortilla’s so my circles were approx. 14″ in diameter. I layered each side with heavy-weight muslin, two layers of cotton batting, a layer of heavy-weight muslin and the top layer of chili pepper fabric. Make two of these and quilt as you would for the potholders. Trim up and then put binding on only 1/2 of each circle. Put the circles together with the decorative fabric to the outside, lining up the bindings and then put binding on the bottom half of the warmer (this binding is going over both circles to hold them together.
This was a super easy project. The hardest part was finding the chili pepper fabric. I finally found some at Walmart in Newton, Kansas. Most Walmarts have closed out their fabric departments but this store has a full selection.

This set is great! It’s so cute and you do such quality work. I like that you told how you layered the potholders. They sound like they’ll work great.

I’ve been hearing people say that Walmart is going to close their craft departments. That’s so sad! I wonder why they are doing that?! It’s always busy and people seem to be making things more these days. I’m going to miss it. šŸ˜¦
